Motion and it’s types | Newton’s law of motion
Definition of Motion:-
Motion :- Change in position of an object with respect to time is called motion. Generally it is classified into to types – Linear motion and non linear motion.
- Linear Motion:- In this type of motion body travels along a straight line.
- Non-linear Motion:– In this type of motion body travels along the non-straight line.
Further classification of motion on the basis of uniformity:-
- Uniform motion :- In this type of motion velocity of body does not change with respect to time.
- Non-uniform motion:- In this velocity changes with respect to time.
Velocity: It is displacement per unit time. Velocity = Displacement / Time Unit of velocity: m/s |
Acceleration: It is the rate of change of velocity. Acceleration = Velocity / Time Unit of acceleration: m/s2 Note– Negative acceleration is called retardation or deceleration. |
Newton’s laws of motion:-
Newton’s First law of motion:
In the universe, every body that is in rest or in uniform motion will be unchanged until or unless applied an external force. It gives the qualitative definition of force.
Examples of Newton’s first law of motion:
- a moving car stops only when brakes are applied.
- When a train starts suddenly, the passengers receive a backward jerk.
- If a horse suddenly starts galloping, the rider receives a backward jerk.
- An apple falls down from the tree when its branch is shaken.
- When a rotating fan is switched off it continues to rotate.
Newton’s Second law of motion:
it is defined as the rate of change of momentum is directly proportional to the applied force and the change takes place in the direction of the applied force. It gives the quantitative definition of force. It is written as
Force = rate of change of momentum F = ma Units of force: SI unit is Newton. CGS unit is Dyne. |
Newton’s Third law of motion:-
This law states that every action has an equal and opposite reaction.
Examples of Newton’s third law of motion:
- An automobile moves forward because of the force exerted on it by the ground which is the reaction to the force exerted on the ground by the tyres.
- The upward thrust of a rocket.
- Hitting off a ball by a bat.
- When you run on a carpet, it moves backward.
- Pushing someone or pushing something we tend to move backward.
- The recoil of a gun.
